Faerie Scavenger

This trash faerie just got scavenging rights at the waste transfer station!!! 🙂 After earning my hours volunteering with Re-Claim it! I have the opportunity to glean things from the huge piles of trash from the metro waste transfer station. With a team of people we go to the “shore” of the trash mounds and we are allowed to grab anything within reach without climbing. We glean every weekend and then load everything inside of a uhaul and take it back to the store to be cleaned/fixed and put on the storefront floor.

Since Re-Claim it! began in 2014 it has gleaned over 100,000 pounds of reusable materials from the “dump”! I am so stoked to have the chance to volunteer with them and get a glimpse at all the incredible things people throw away!

So many things are thrown away that can be reused. These materials can be used to do good things…Like building tiny houses for the houseless community!

Last week was the unveiling of 14 tiny houses that were part of the Partners on Dwelling initiative to create villages for the houseless community.  I helped build and paint the two tiny houses created by  City Repair and Communitecture. While it was chilly in the warehouse it was so fun working on this project and connecting with everyone involved. The completed tiny houses were shown in a parking lot at PNCA downtown and will be taken to some land in the city to create a village for single women in the houseless community. Check out the full story on the Communitecture blog!

There are over 4,000 houseless folks in the city of Portland. Here is a short documentary entitled “On the Ground” put out by the wonderful non-profit Sister of the Road about the houseless community in Portland.
